Overview
Archive NoteThe canal links northern and southern China across five important river basins: the Hai, Yellow, Huai, Yangtze and Qiantang rivers. Its different stretches were constructed, redirected and maintained across numerous dynasties.
The UNESCO Grand Canal property encompasses historic segments and hydraulic heritage across different eras. China's national cultural protection plan separately gives almost 3,200 kilometres for the larger three-part Grand Canal system; that number should not replace the 1,794-km Beijing–Hangzhou route.
