Overview

Archive Note

The five-piece New Orleans ensemble recorded at Victor's New York studio on 26 February 1917. The disc was publicly issued in May, and the Library of Congress preserves discographic records for Victor 18255.

The release was influential in introducing jazz to a broad record-buying public, but does not imply that the ensemble invented jazz. Earlier Columbia test sessions must be distinguished from a documented commercial issue.
