Overview
Archive NoteIn 1471 Pope Sixtus IV donated bronze statues formerly held at the Lateran to the people of Rome, establishing the basis of a civic art collection.
Today the museums occupy the Palazzo dei Conservatori, Palazzo Nuovo and associated buildings around Campidoglio. Those galleries opened later; the date 1471 refers specifically to the public collection's origins.
