First Nuclear Power Supplied to a Public Grid

The Soviet Obninsk Nuclear Power Plant connected to the Moscow grid on 27 June 1954, becoming the first nuclear power station to supply a conventional grid according to the IAEA. Its electrical output was about 5 MW, distinct from EBR-I's 1951 experimental demonstration.

Overview

Archive Note

Obninsk used the AM-1 water-cooled, graphite-moderated reactor with a net electrical capacity of about 5 MW, demonstrating early civilian nuclear power.

The US EBR-I reactor produced electricity in 1951, but did not supply a conventional public grid. This record is specifically about grid supply.

The station shut permanently on 29 April 2002 and was subsequently preserved as a nuclear technology heritage site.

Verification basis and limitations

Verified

The record conclusion has sufficient verification support.

Basis: direct confirmation by an authority

The IAEA explicitly dates connection to the Moscow grid to 27 June 1954, distinct from experimental electricity generation in 1951. Present-day Russia is used for geographic parenting only, without rewriting the station's 1954 Soviet historical jurisdiction.
