Archive NoteThe LHC first started up on 10 September 2008 and is the latest addition to CERN's accelerator complex.
It occupies a 27-kilometre tunnel about 100 metres underground, using superconducting magnets to accelerate protons or ions to near the speed of light.
In July 2012 the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the LHC announced the discovery of the Higgs boson.
