Overview

Archive Note

Strong magnetic fields support research into electronic structure, phase transitions and superconductivity. Resistive magnets drive large currents through coils, requiring high-power supplies and intensive water cooling.

The Hefei team improved its coil structure and fabrication to reach 42.02 T with a 32.3-MW supply, surpassing the US National High Magnetic Field Laboratory's 41.4-T record from 2017. Hefei's separate 45.22-T hybrid magnet belongs to another technology category.
