Overview

Archive Note

In 2014, entomologist Zhao Li found a 62.4-cm female giant stick insect in Guangxi, China, measured with legs outstretched and brought it to the Insect Museum of West China for breeding.

A captive-bred descendant later measured 64 cm in fully extended overall length, reported by Xinhua in August 2017 and separately confirmed by the Guinness longest-insect listing. Body-only length and total extended-leg length are distinct rankings.

Verification basis and limitations

Verified

The record conclusion has sufficient verification support.

Basis: direct confirmation by an authority

Guinness's Longest insect record lists a 640-mm fully extended Phryganistria chinensis bred at the Chengdu museum and made public in August 2017. Xinhua reported the new 64-cm captive-bred offspring on 8 August 2017, after an earlier 62.4-cm specimen. August 2017 is the public announcement month, not a verified original measurement day.

Comparison boundaries still under review

Body-only length is a separate record category. August 2017 is the announcement date, not an independently verified day of specimen measurement.
