Overview
Archive NoteReports from Hayden's 1871 expedition and earlier exploration encouraged Congress to preserve Yellowstone's geothermal landscapes, wildlife and scenery.
The 1872 act reserved the area as a public park under federal authority. Hot Springs in Arkansas had been reserved in 1832, but the NPS differentiates that earlier reservation from the modern national-park designation.
