Current record value
Pepper X was developed by American grower Ed Currie and announced as the new record by Guinness in October 2023. The Scoville scale is based on capsaicinoid concentration rather than literal temperature.
The predecessor Carolina Reaper averaged around 1.64 million SHU. Pepper X's result represents a multi-year average and does not imply every fruit has exactly the same heat.
The record conclusion has sufficient verification support.
Basis: direct confirmation by an authority
Guinness, the US National Park Service or the auction house explicitly supports the record comparison and figure.
