Overview

Archive Note

Yellowstone has more than 10,000 hydrothermal features, including hot springs, mud pots, fumaroles and geysers. Geysers are a narrower category, requiring underground plumbing and conditions that support intermittent hot-water eruptions, so the full number of hydrothermal features must not be treated as a geyser count.

A May 2025 USGS Yellowstone Volcano Observatory account places the global active-geyser population at roughly 1,000, around half of them in Yellowstone. Activity changes over time as features become dormant or begin erupting, so the reported count is an approximate inventory rather than an immutable total.

Verification basis and limitations

Verified

The record conclusion has sufficient verification support.

Basis: direct confirmation by an authority

The US National Park Service explicitly identifies Yellowstone National Park as having the world's largest concentration of active geysers, more than half the global total. The USGS Yellowstone Volcano Observatory's May 2025 account describes at least 500 actively erupting geysers in Yellowstone and roughly 1,000 active geysers worldwide. Counts are approximate because individual geysers become active or dormant.

Comparison boundaries still under review

This record concerns the number of active geysers within a defined region, not caldera area or eruption height. About 500 is an observational estimate and can vary with geyser activity and inventory methods; it is not a permanently exact count.
