Overview

Archive Note

GTC stands at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory on La Palma in the Canary Islands. Its 36 hexagonal mirror segments act together as a single 10.4-metre diameter optical surface. First light was achieved in July 2007, scientific observations started on 16 March 2009, and the formal inauguration was held in July 2009. These are distinct milestones, so the start of science operations is used for this operational record.

The effective collecting area is approximately 75.7 square metres. Secondary and tertiary mirrors feed its scientific instruments. ESO's Extremely Large Telescope is designed to exceed it, but has not entered operation.
