Archive NoteSveriges Riksbank is headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden. Its predecessor was Stockholms Banco, founded in 1656 as Sweden's first bank and one of the earliest issuers of banknotes in Europe.
Stockholms Banco failed in 1668; that same year the Riksdag of the Estates established Riksens Ständers Bank, today's Sveriges Riksbank. The Riksbank's official history identifies it as the world's oldest central bank.
The institution has operated continuously since then and adopted the name Sveriges Riksbank in 1867.
