World's Largest Metropolitan Economy by GDP

Oxford Economics identifies New York as the world's largest metropolitan economy in its 2026 global city research. Separately, the US BEA's historical series records roughly US$2.299 trillion of nominal GDP for the New York–Newark–Jersey City metropolitan statistical area in 2023; these are not identical geographies or reference years.

Overview

Archive Note

New York's wider metropolitan economy crosses the administrative limits of New York City and is connected to adjoining areas in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The US metropolitan statistical area is defined through counties and commuting relationships, so city-proper GDP and metro GDP must not be conflated.

The US Bureau of Economic Analysis previously published annual nominal GDP for the New York–Newark–Jersey City MSA. Its historical 2023 reading was US$2,298,868.394 million, or approximately US$2.299 trillion. This is a 2023 US statistical observation, not a 2026 figure or an Oxford Economics estimate. BEA discontinued direct metropolitan-area GDP publications while retaining county GDP data.

Oxford Economics' 2026 global cities research describes New York as having the world's biggest metropolitan economy. Its Economics category, however, is a composite also incorporating growth, stability, GDP per capita and other measures. Neither the overall Economics score nor the BEA's 2023 MSA amount is itself a same-year, harmonized cross-country GDP comparison.
