Overview
Archive NoteThe 3000 m steeplechase is a track distance race requiring runners to clear fixed barriers and water jumps. It differs fundamentally from a flat 3000 m race and cross-country obstacle courses.
At the Paris Diamond League meeting in 2023, Girma ran 7:52.11, surpassing Saif Shaheen's 7:53.63 world record from Brussels in 2004 by 1.52 seconds.
World Athletics' official meeting results designate the performance a world and area record. The performance took place at Stade Charléty, rather than at a generic city-centre location.
