Overview
Archive NoteHoba was found in 1920 near Grootfontein in Namibia and is classified as an iron meteorite. The Meteoritical Society's official database records its name, discovery year, location and a mass of 60 tonnes.
The American Museum of Natural History identifies Hoba as the largest intact meteorite found on Earth. Unlike fragmented meteorite falls, its primary mass remains at the discovery site.
The 60-tonne mass is an estimate, not a precision weighing; sampling and historical changes to the mass can affect estimates. The discovery year 1920 is not a verified date of impact.
