Overview
Archive NoteThe common ostrich is a large, flightless bird native to Africa. Its powerful legs enable rapid running, while its wings help with balance and turning rather than flight.
It inhabits grasslands, savannas and shrublands. Adult males are generally taller than females and a fully grown bird may reach around 2.7 metres in height.
Ostriches have two toes on each foot, unlike most birds. Their predominantly plant-based diet can also include insects and other small animals.
