Overview
Archive NoteThe African savanna elephant is larger than both the African forest elephant and Asian elephant. Its large ears help dissipate heat and its forelegs are often longer than its hind legs.
The species occurs across numerous countries in sub-Saharan Africa, inhabiting savannas, woodlands and some dry landscapes. It feeds on grasses, foliage, bark and fruit, with food choices changing seasonally.
By modifying trees and vegetation, savanna elephants shape habitats used by many other species. Poaching and habitat loss remain major conservation threats.
