Overview
Archive NoteThe Pacific spans the vast waters between Asia and Oceania on one side and the Americas on the other, extending through both northern and southern hemispheres.
NOAA publications report slightly different estimates owing to ocean-area conventions. This record retains the conservative wording 'more than 155 million square kilometers' rather than mixing incompatible area definitions.
The Pacific is also the deepest ocean, containing the Mariana Trench and Challenger Deep. Ocean depth is a separate record metric from surface area.
