Steamboat Geyser lies in the Back Basin of Norris Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park, where pressurized hot water and steam periodically discharge through vents.
Its major eruptions are highly irregular, with intervals spanning days to years, whereas smaller eruptions occur more frequently and reach much lower heights.
The National Park Service notes that New Zealand's Waimangu Geyser produced taller historical eruptions, but has not done so for over a century. That distinction is why this record is explicitly restricted to active geysers.
