Marseille's city council established a four-delegate commercial bureau on 5 August 1599, the predecessor of its chamber of commerce and commonly regarded as the origin of the modern chamber-of-commerce institution.

Marseille established a trade bureau to represent commercial interests at the end of the sixteenth century.
Chambers later spread across France; the system was interrupted in 1791 and revived in 1802. Earlier merchant guilds are excluded.
